Earlier today at Columbus Park, State Senator Shelley B. Mayer and State Assemblyman Steve Otis gathered with their colleagues in State, County and Local government to announce the inclusion of an additional $10.85 million in the NY State Budget FY 2024-2025 for the Mamaroneck-Sheldrake Army Corp of Engineers flood mitigation plan. Officials also announced a newly instituted process to accelerate and begin flood mitigation projects in advance of the commencement of the USACE work with the use of state, county, and local funding.

This past Tuesday, April 30th, the Village of Mamaroneck Arts Council in conjunction with the Mamaroneck Public Library hosted a wonderful Poetry Walk led by Mamaroneck Author Laureate, Melissa Joplin Higley, followed by painting new Poetry Pebbles for the Mary Louise Cox Memorial Poetry Garden (corner of Prospect Ave. and Library Lane). Spring Tree Walk - THIS Sunday, May 5
The Village of Mamaroneck's Tree Committee has organized a FREE Spring Tree Walk with Jocelyn Kleinman, Education Director of the Sheldrake Environmental Center. In conjunction with the Westchester Land Trust, the Tree Committee will visit Mamaroneck’s Otter Creek Preserve. Tree walks offer an opportunity to spend time outdoors and enjoy the life-giving benefits of trees while learning about our local urban forest. Participants will explore tree species and learn some in-depth information, fun facts, and tips about caring for trees. This event is FREE and open to the public. While the Registration Link is now closed, attendees are still welcome to attend. Click here for more information. Participants will be asked to complete Waiver Forms from the Westchester Land Trust before the Tree Walk begins.

Leaf Blowers Prohibited Begins May 15
Beginning on May 15th, the operation of leaf blowers, per the Village of Mamaroneck's Leaf Blower Law, is prohibited until September 30. This includes ALL leaf blowers including gas, electric AND vacuum. Furthermore, Westchester County law requires that landscaping contractors be registered with the County and that leaf blowers meet County emissions regulations. The Village of Mamaroneck looks forward to the American Legion Post 90’s Memorial Day Parade and Observances. In preparation for this event, the Village of Mamaroneck has put together this Community Announcement to provide the public with important information. The American Legion Post 90’s Memorial Day Parade and Observances will kick off at 5:00pm on Sunday, May 26. (Please note this is NOT on the observed holiday of Memorial Day, which falls on Monday, May 27.)

Food Scrap Pick Up Program Subscription Renewal Deadline: Monday, June 3, 2024
The Food Scrap Pick Up Program Subscription Service for the 2023-2024 year will expire on May 31, 2024. If you are interested in renewing your Food Scrap Pick Up Program subscription service or if you are interested in joining the Food Scrap Pick Up Program for the 2024-2025 year, the deadline to submit payment is Monday, June 3, 2024. Current subscribers who do not pay the $52 annual fee by June 3 will be dropped from the Food Scrap Pick Up Program. For more information, click here.

Harbor Island Park Beach & Parking Passes Are Now On Sale
Harbor Island Park seasonal beach and parking pass sales began on Monday, April 1, 2024. Individuals interested in purchasing a seasonal beach and/or parking pass can do so in person, Monday to Friday, between 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. at the Parks & Recreation office located in the Stephen E. Village of Mamaroneck Day Camp at Harbor Island Park
Online registration for the Village of Mamaroneck Day Camp (VMDC) is now open to Village of Mamaroneck residents and non-Village of Mamaroneck residents. If you are uncertain about your household's municipality, please call the Parks & Recreation Department at (914) 777-7784.
VMDC at Harbor Island Park will operate from July 1 to August 9, Monday through Friday, between 9:00am and 3:00pm. There will be no camp on Thursday, July 4 in honor of the Independence Day holiday as well as on Friday, July 5. Early Morning Drop-off and Extended Day programs are available if you register for them. Camp registration is open to children age four (by the start of camp season) up to teens who will be entering 10th grade.

Summer Day Camp Staff
We are currently staffing for the 2024 summer camp season. Day Camp is a six- week program running from July 1, 2024 to August 9, 2024. Work hours are from 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Monday to Friday. There is no camp held on Thursday, July 4th, and Friday July 5th. Staff orientation will be held on Wednesday, June 19, 2024, Thursday June 20, 2024 & Friday, June 21, 2024, from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Orientation is mandatory, and Staff must be available to attend all orientation dates. College orientation events will be the only acceptable conflict to skip orientation. College visits do not qualify as an acceptable conflict to skip orientation. Orientation dates will be held at the Stephen E. Johnston Beach Pavilion at Harbor Island Park. Camp staff pay rates begin at $15.00 per hour. Harbor Island Park & Stephen E. Johnston Beach
The Stephen E. Johnston Beach and Harbor Island Park parking booth are open seven days a week beginning Friday, May 24, 2024, and close for the season on Monday, September 2, 2024. To be considered for a Lifeguard position, Lifeguards must possess a valid lifeguard certification with waterfront skills.
The following shifts are currently available for the listed positions:
- CASHIERS: TWO SHIFTS DAILY – 8:30 A.M. – 1:00 P.M., 1:00 P.M. – 6:00 P.M.
- BEACH ATTENDANTS: TWO SHIFTS DAILY – 9:00 A.M. – 1:30 P.M., 1:30 P.M. – 6:00 P.M.
- LIFEGUARDS: TWO SHIFTS DAILY – 8:00 A.M – 1:00 P.M., 1:00 P.M. – 6:00 P.M.
- PARKING BOOTH ATTENDANTS: TWO SHIFTS DAILY (MON-THURS) 8:00 A.M. – 2:00 P.M., 2:00 P.M. – 8:00 P.M.
- FRIDAY, SATURDAY & SUNDAYS – THREE SHIFTS AVAILABLE – 6:00 A.M. – 11:00 A.M., 11:00 A.M. – 3:30 P.M., 3:30 P.M. – 8:00 P.M.
Active staff for the 2024 season will be given the opportunity to additionally work Recreation special events held throughout the year. Orientation for new hires will be held on Monday, May 20th, 2024, from 4:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. at the Stephen. E Johnston Beach Pavilion.

Total Body Workout with Joyce - ONGOING
Get fit this year with Joyce! Fitness classes available on Mondays and Thursdays from 6:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. at the Stephen E. Johnston Beach Pavilion in Harbor Island Park. Learn how to get a total body workout utilizing low impact step toning, circuit training, kick boxing, kettle ball exercises and Tabata. 30 classes are included in the registration fee and all fitness levels are welcome. Village of Mamaroneck Tree Law
Trees help sustain an ecological system that provides climatic advantages to people and wildlife alike: cooling the air, buffering the wind and providing a natural barrier to noise. Conserving these natural assets was the impetus behind a decision by the Village of Mamaroneck's Board of Trustees (with support from the Tree Committee) to vote on and enact a new tree law. On October 12, 2021, the Village passed a local law making property owners in the village responsible for the maintenance of trees on their property, including their removal. The penalty for failing to follow this law is a fine of $1,050 or more. The law is intended to preserve our trees, which provide numerous benefits, including the reduction of air pollution, increase to the tree canopy, and the improvement of the drainage and maintenance of a healthy eco-system. Studies show that a minimum tree canopy cover of 40% is the threshold needed to reap the full benefits of trees. A goal of the Board of Trustees, supported by the Tree Committee, is to achieve this minimum tree canopy coverage and maintain it on an ongoing basis. The Tree Committee as well as the Building Department has put together the following resources to help educate and inform residents about our Village's Tree Law.

As of September 2, Westchester County’s “Upon Request” Law Aimed at Curbing Use of Single-Use Foodware Is Now In Effect
In a significant step towards environmental sustainability, Westchester County is reminding residents and business owners of its "Upon Request" single-use foodware law, which took effect on September 2. This legislation aims to reduce the consumption of single-use plastics by promoting a more mindful approach to their usage within food service establishments by limiting the use of single-use foodware products to only when specifically requested by the customer. Empty Slips at the Marina Available for Rent
Empty slips at the marina for boats of varying sizes are now available for rent. The Village of Mamaroneck Harbor Master oversees and administers all vessels located within the waterways of Harbor Island, assigns each applicant a slip space, and is responsible for maintaining records of dock and mooring assignments. Families and students attending Mamaroneck Avenue School will be putting on their walking shoes and walking to/from school for "Walk to School Week" starting Monday, May 13th. Watch this video from LMC Media about all the great benefits for you and our community when students and families park the car and choose to walk to school. In 2019, the Village’s Board of Trustees passed legislation making the speed limit on (almost all) Village of Mamaroneck streets 25 MPH. From leading Walking Safety Assessments (in 2016, 2017, 2018, and two in 2019) of Mamaroneck's roadways to partnering with the Mamaroneck Safe Routes to School Coalition, the Village supports a more equitable, safe, accessible roadway system in our Village.
